A business can appear throughout the sampled Google results and rarely be named in an AI answer. Others appear across both. We examined 20 local industries to make those differences visible and checkable.

Across 20 Lubbock industries
Showing up on Google does not guarantee regular appearances in AI answers.
139 of 244 tracked business website groups, about 57%, appeared in Google's top ten at least once but were named in fewer than one in ten sampled answers on at least one AI platform.
The qualifying groups span all 20 industries studied. This is a finding across the full tracked cohort, not a single-business example.
This measures low name detection, not complete absence from AI. Website groups can include multiple locations or national brands. It is not a percentage of every business in Lubbock.
How we calculated the Google-to-AI gap
We included every tracked business website with at least one top-ten Google appearance in the pilot. A shared domain counts once. For each, we checked the five paired questions and ten repetitions on ChatGPT Search, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity in the industries where that website appeared on Google.
The threshold is fewer than 5 of 50 answers per platform. Eight website groups appear in two Google-visible industries, so their 100 answers are pooled and the equivalent threshold is fewer than 10 of 100. A single Google appearance qualifies a website for this comparison; it does not mean that website consistently ranks highly.
We reviewed shortened names, legal suffixes, punctuation, acronyms and scraped name formatting. Corrections reduced the initial 168 qualifying groups to 141. Two unresolved groups are withheld from the headline count, while remaining in the denominator. Known uncertain name matches are treated as possible detections before a group qualifies.

The platform counts overlap. A website group qualifying on multiple platforms counts only once in the 139. This does not measure recommendations, citations, customer traffic, business quality or algorithmic causes. An own-website link without a name is not counted as a name detection.
Exploratory follow-up completed September 11, 2026, using unchanged study v2 evidence. The below-10% threshold was chosen after collection. Repeated answers are not independent consumer samples. Automated checks and builder review are not independent human review; unknown aliases may still affect counts.
Google visibility does not guarantee regular appearances in AI answers
About 57% (139 of 244) of tracked business website groups that appeared in Google's sampled top ten were rarely detected on at least one AI platform. This is low detection in sampled answers, not complete absence from AI.
Which AI assistant you ask can change which Lubbock businesses you hear about
CoNetrix was named in 50/50 sampled ChatGPT answers and 0/50 Claude answers. Gorilla Law Firm showed the opposite contrast: 1/50 on ChatGPT and 40/50 on Claude. These are examples of platform differences, not a ranking of the assistants.
The Google-to-AI gap reaches restaurants and dentists
The pattern also appears in everyday local services: 14 of 21 tracked Google-visible restaurant website groups and 16 of 25 dentist groups were detected fewer than 5/50 times on at least one AI platform, even when known uncertain matches count as possible detections.
Rare means fewer than 10% of sampled answers on at least one of four AI platforms: fewer than 5/50 for a single-vertical group, or 10/100 when two verticals are pooled. It does not mean absent.
The 244 tracked business website groups each appeared at least once in a sampled Google top ten. They are not a census of Lubbock businesses or 244 consistently high-ranking businesses. Names and domains are different measurements; neither is a recommendation or business-quality score.
Different paths to discovering a business
For residents, these contrasts show why one search surface may not show the same options as another. For businesses, they show why an organic ranking cannot stand in for an AI visibility measurement. This study does not measure consumer switching, clicks, leads or revenue.

Tracked business website groups, not all Lubbock businesses
Each vertical page contains the cross-platform visibility table, its five exact question pairs, AI Overview frequency and observed source-domain patterns. Compare the recorded names and domains, then inspect the counts by question.
These are repeat observations of selected questions, not a random consumer survey, proof of ranking causes or an assessment of business quality. API and scraped platform configurations differ. Complete semantic recommendation rates and citywide business league tables remain withheld.
Study v2 includes six same-question ChatGPT retries and one revised personal-injury question on all six configurations. The original edition and outcomes are retained. See the version history and its effect on the findings.
